You know how you are what you eat?
In America we have that all screwed up, adding tons of sugar, stripping away the nutrients, then “fortifying” our cereal.
I could easily have kept that up, but it was way more interesting to eat one of Malaysia’s staple breakfasts - roti canai (pronounced chon-eye) and teh tarik (pulled tea, a legacy of the British / Muslim-Indian culture).
When you order this combo, there’s a lot of athleticism going on behind the scenes if you care to look - in the way the roti dough is worked and how the tea is pulled. Very fascinating stuff.
If you’re lucky, like I was this day, the roti canai is served on a banana leaf, and the teh tarik sweet and foamy (unless you order it “kurang manis” or with less sugar). Add a dollop of kari ikan (fish curry) and you’re good to go!
